Delivering A2 Protein-Rich Sheep Milk and Driving Sustainable Growth
Maui Milk is powering the future of New Zealand sheep milk, combining world-class genetics, sustainable farming and premium production to meet fast-growing global demand. As featured in NZ Dairy Magazine, CEO Greg Hamill shares how the company is exporting A2 protein-rich sheep milk powder and developing new value-added products for China, where lactose intolerance drives strong demand.
Founded in 2014 as a joint venture between Shanghai-based Super Organic Dairy and Māori farming trust Waituhi Kuratau, Maui Milk is now part of Maui Food Group Ltd, with 11 farms supplying around 3 million litres of sheep milk each year—and two more farms coming soon. At the heart of growth is Waikino Station near Lake Taupō, home to 1,300 milking ewes and a genetics programme that continues to improve the unique Southern Cross Dairy Sheep, which naturally produce only A2 protein for easier digestion and exceptional nutrition.
Maui Milk is the first New Zealand sheep milk producer licensed to AsureQuality’s AQ Assured™ Transparency Programme, ensuring traceability and premium quality. Dairy sheep also deliver clear environmental benefits, with lower nitrogen leaching, efficient pasture use and high animal welfare as sheep graze outdoors year-round.
A new strategic partnership with China’s Mengniu Group will accelerate production and open doors across Asia, strengthening Maui Milk’s position as the leader of New Zealand’s sheep milk revolution.
